Description
USDA Forest Service | Wilderness & Trail Map
For anyone headed into the Cohutta, this is the map to have in your pack.
The official USDA Forest Service Cohutta and Big Frog Wilderness map provides detailed coverage of the interconnected Cohutta Wilderness in Georgia and Big Frog Wilderness in Tennessee. At a scale of 1:31,680 — 1 inch = ½ mile — it offers considerably more detail than a general road atlas or regional recreation map and is designed for navigating and understanding the wilderness itself.
This is hiking and backcountry country: rugged ridgelines, river crossings, remote campsites, and an extensive trail network extending across the Georgia–Tennessee state line. Whether you’re planning a day hike, backpacking trip, fishing trip, or simply trying to better understand one of the Southeast’s significant wilderness areas, a detailed paper map belongs in the navigation kit.
Detailed Wilderness Coverage
This map is useful for:
- Cohutta Wilderness in North Georgia
- Big Frog Wilderness in Southeast Tennessee
- Wilderness trails and trail junctions
- Streams, rivers, ridgelines, and other terrain features
- Trailheads and wilderness access
- Planning day hikes and multi-day backpacking routes
- Understanding the relationship between the Georgia and Tennessee wilderness areas
- Backcountry navigation alongside a compass and GPS
- Maintaining a paper navigation backup in remote terrain
The 1:31,680 scale provides approximately four times the detail of a 1:126,720 National Forest map, making it much better suited to planning travel on foot.
Expedition Georgia Field Note
The Cohutta is exactly the kind of place where we want a real map in the pack.
It’s big enough, rugged enough, and remote enough that relying entirely on a phone isn’t a great navigation strategy. Trails intersect, creek crossings can change the character of a route considerably, and once you’re down in the river valleys, your sense of the surrounding terrain can disappear quickly.
A detailed paper map and compass let you do more than follow a line on a screen. You can study the ridges and drainages, understand where a trail is taking you, identify alternate routes, and build a mental picture of the country before you ever put your boots on the trail.
One important consideration: this is an older Forest Service map, originally published in 1996. That’s worth knowing before heading into the field. Roads, trails, access points, regulations, and land-management conditions can change. We recommend using it as part of a navigation system and verifying current conditions with the Forest Service and up-to-date sources before your trip.
For the Cohutta especially: carry the map, carry a compass, and know how to use both.
