A vehicle-mounted tent is an excellent method for safe, comfortable camping utilizing your vehicle as a base camp. These tents are designed to fit on most vehicles utilizing a rack system. Many factory roof racks will work fine but aftermarket roof racks are typically easier to mount to and a bit more robust.
The tent can be mounted to the standard roof rack on most vehicles (assuming it has crossbars) or onto a truck bed rack system. The key is to make sure that whatever rack you mount the tent to has a Dynamic Weight Capacity of at least the weight of the tent (about 160 lbs). This is the weight that the rack can physically carry while the vehicle is in motion.
When the tent is in use (aka the vehicle is parked), the weight of the tent plus the weight of the occupants is dispersed over the entire frame of the vehicle (assuming it’s mounted to roof racks). The weight is also dispersed to the supplied ladder.
Make sure to check your manufacturer’s roof rack system ahead of time to ensure it will support the weight of the tent and the occupants.
